Articles : Five free local releases you should have, the sequel.

By on September 26, 2011

So it seems our original collection of free music  was a rather popular post, which makes complete sense considering it is just links to free music. So, seeing as today is a bit of a slow news day, we thought it would be a good time to make the sequel. Below, once again, are five fantastic Australian releases that are worth your time. And remember, if you really dig what you hear, chuck them a donation or buy a physical copy, or at least catch them at a live show.

To download each release, simply click on the little link below each description.

Ironhide – Create/Collapse/Repeat

If technical, frenetic riffing inside a combination of math metal, hardcore gets you a little excited then Ironhide are a band you definitely don’t want to skip over. Featuring ex-members of Western Decay, Hesperus, The Surrogate (R.I.P.) and Stabbedintheguts, Create/Collapse/Repeat is a superbly balanced release that seems to fly by in a lot less than it’s thirty minute runtime. And look out for when they break out the thick, atmospheric stuff in the last few tracks. It’s godly.

This is where you can get it.

Meticulous Despoilment – The Beer Battered, Bacon Wrapped, Deep Fried Burrito

I whored these Tasmanians around on the site back when they first released this, but just in case you missed that, I’m doing it again. Chock-full of mad slams, brutal grindings, and poetic titles such as “Hardcore is for Fags” and “I Would Make Love so Susan Boyle”, it’s a must-hear for fans of the style. Extra props for the superb glitchy remix of “The Cumpuppets of Notre Dame” at the end as well. The guys are working on a full length at the moment as well, so keep your earholes open for that one.

Madslamz.

Okera – The Black Rain

This Melbourne death/doom band have already made quite a name for themselves in the local scene, despite only having released this three track demo so far. Fans of My Dying Bride, Swallow The Sun, and anything in that vein should just stop reading and click the link. The rest of you should click it anyway. And, like the previous band, these guys are currently working on a full length release as well.

Doom on.

pointbreakdown – Live to Get Rad

Fourteen minutes of totally radical slams and samples from 1991’s Point Break. Need I say more?

SQUAT!

Encircling Sea – I

While this release has nothing on it’s follow-up Écru, which is quite easily one of my favourite things to come out of this country, I is still worth a listen, and it’s free. If you have no patience for slow-builders, steer clear, but if one 48 minute track of drone, doom and extremely subtle post-rock sounds like your sort of thing, grab it. And then, break out your wallet and purchase Écru. Or just buy that one. Either way is good.
