Articles : Five free local releases you should have

By on August 11, 2011

With more and more bands releasing music in different ways, for different prices, on different mediums, there is no doubt things get lost in the mix. Maybe that link was posted on Facebook during the one or two hours of the day that you didn’t have your eye on it, or perhaps you just didn’t investigate that new band because you already have too many other albums on your to buy list. Well, the moment you opened this post was the same moment you no longer have an excuse. Linked and described below, for your convenience, are several absolutely free Australian releases that we over at Metal Obsession (well, specifically myself, but it sounds like a more substantial backing if I name the whole site, right?) highly recommend you give a couple of spins. I mean let’s face it, you have nothing to lose. But remember, if you really do like what you hear, purchase a physical copy or at least donate a few bucks so they can afford to throw together another one.

The Schoenberg Automaton – The Schoenberg Automaton

Featuring members of Empyrean, Function Cease and Cross the Lips of Grace, this Brisbane-based quintet made a name for themselves at record speed with the release of their debut EP/demo/whatever-you-want-to-call-it, and with good reason. These three tracks of absolutely spastic technical death metal (as in, the interesting kind that confuses you as you listen, not the widdly-widdly “look I can play my guitar” kind) are absolute must-hears for death metal lovers, or anybody who likes their music just that little bit quirky.

Adrift For Days – The Lunar Maria

Feel like lying down in the dark, putting your headphones on, and forgetting where or what you are? This 70+ minute stoner doom epic is for you. Stunningly also a debut release, The Lunar Maria is one hell of a journey, with fucking massive riffs, Earth-esque quieter passages, touches of psychedelia, plenty of fuzz, and some of the most varied vocals you’ll ever hear on a doom album. My advice is to download this now, and absorb as much of it as you can before their upcoming second album destroys your speakers and steals your weed.

The Matador – Descent Into The Maelstrom

Absolutely drenched in luscious atmosphere, Brisbane’s The Matador made me rather happy in certain areas with the release of Descent Into The Maelstrom. Thick riffs, absolutely gorgeous post-rock influences, and a sound that will undeniably quadruple in size on the stage, this is the type of release that fans of Isis, Rosetta and Cult of Luna (and anything with post- before it) will have on repeat for quite a while.

Tower of Fire – Soundtrack to A Tower of Fire Album IV

The most epic wait mankind has ever suffered is finally over. After two thousand years the second coming of the lord is finally upon us and he has taken on a more powerful, faster, fruitier form than ever before. And now, he demands the ears of his followers.”

Power metal fans who take their music that bit too seriously might want to avoid this one, but for everybody else: enjoy! Despite the rather obvious fact that Tower of Fire is essentially a joke with some of the most embarrassingly catchy lyrics to ever exist, it’s also surprisingly one of the best sounding power metal albums to come out of this country.

Battle Pope – Pantless Carnage

Lasting  a whopping 10 minutes (well, more like 6 if we’re just talking about the actual music), the debut release from Sydney’s “hypersexualised sludged-out swing/grind quartet” is a brief but exhilarating party. Featuring members of Serious beak, Ebolie, Kill A Celebrity and the aforementioned Adrift For Days, this is grind to drink and yell to. Although with titles like “Cocaine Yeehah Muthafucker Yeah!” and “Bowladick”, you probably already guess that.

Party on dudes.
