Album Reviews : Drown this City – Alpha // Survivor

Wow, this Melbourne band is like a damn after months of heavy rain, ready to burst, ready to explode and flow out across the nation and the world. And this EP is another step in their steady evolution, creatively and notoriety-wise.

At the same time, while they have the formula down to a finely-honed point, this is no formulaic, cookie-cutter metalcore release. There is real artistry in the songwriting here, and pure passion in the delivery. DTC bring the best of both of these often unattainable worlds, and it’s just a joy to behold.

This is displayed to best effect on the truly brutal but beautiful single In Your Image, which this humble writer, who has followed their career with great interest since their inception, believes to be the best track they have created. The heavy parts smash you square in the face like the hammer of the gods and the melodic moments bring a tear to your eye with their earnest, heartbreaking passion.

This is one of the releases of the year. Hopefully the next step in this band’s burgeoning career will be a full-blown full lengther that lifts them to the international stardom they so richly deserve.
