Album Reviews : Tempest Rising – Transmutation

By on February 15, 2015

tempest_rising_transmutation_1014Tempest Rising are a metal band from Perth, Western Australia.

This is my first review of the year, and oh boy dare I say that it couldn’t really have started better.

I mostly try to review bands that I have never heard of before, it is a brilliant way to discover new music and I am so happy that out of all the options I had, I picked this album. Transmutation kicks off with a “fist in your face” track called “No Remorse” (no, not a cover of the Metallica song). The guitar riffs are just as heavy as they are addictive. The growls mix extremely well with the somewhat unusual clean vocals, they almost sound a bit eerie.

The description for “No Remorse” pretty much fits in on every single song on this album. I can’t remember the last time I heard a release that had so many addictive songs on it. The running time is 32 minutes spread across 9 songs. I thought that it was a bit short to begin with, however, the quality is maintained throughout the whole album, which makes up for the minor issue. There is not a single poor song on this record, which is really surprising for a debut album.

The absolute highlight awaits at the halfway mark, “The Descent” has a ridiculously amazing intro, and the chorus is really top level stuff, I haven’t heard anything quite like it since I listened to Voyager’s V for the first time back in June last year.

I think the reason as to why Tempest Rising stand out from other similar sounding bands is the brilliant vocals combined with the fact that the music isn’t overly complicated. It’s heavy, in places it’s catchy, and also groovy.
It’s only February, and my first review of the year, however I can already see Transmutation being a contender for my top 10 list when the year is over. I also can’t stress enough how excited I am about the band’s upcoming East Coast tour in March/April (together with Red Bee among others). I will make sure to write down my thoughts about the concert in Sydney as a follow-up to this review, so watch this space.

If you want to check out a couple Tempest Rising songs you should listen to “No Remorse”, “The Descent”, “Dominion That Falls” and “Devil In Me”. However, you really should listen to the whole album. I am very excited about what this band will bring to the table in the future. Check them out in a city near you soon, you won’t regret it!
