Among Them – Lachlan Carroll

Press blurbs. The obligatory and often epithet laced ode to an artist’s release, typically designed to encourage journo types to enthusiastically frame a band in an encouraging light. Every once in a while though, an artist presents a statement so real… one can’t help but pause and reflect on life’s many travails for a moment.

One of those moments came when reading the introduction to the new single from a Perth outfit, called Among Them. Here it is: ‘The new single, “Purpose”, is about solitude, forging strength as one relies solely on their own devices to overcome the pressures of life. However, it is easy to become lost in a self-perpetuating state of despair if one faces everything alone. Both self-reliance, as well as companionship, are equal parts of achieving success.’

Lachlan Carroll is the vocalist and chief lyricist for Among Them. When quizzed on his thoughts on the statement this is his response.

“That one was a big one for me, that was one of the main features of the things that I was thinking about as I was writing. It just came from, a lot of the time I do the first part where locking yourself down and trying to disconnect from everything and trying to deal with everything on your own, and then a lot of the times you reach the point where you cannot get any further just relying on yourself and sometimes you need to stretch your hand out and get some help from other people. Not even just help, just to have other people around to help support you, get through times, or get through things you need to do. So, that is where it came from.”

Anxiety, depression and all manner of personal crisis can creep up on people and manifest when they just do not expect it. Every single human being on the planet can relate to the sentiments expressed in Carroll’s words. It speaks volumes about the sort of music that Among Them are forging through “Purpose”.

“The anxiety thing, that was a big thing for me as well. That is where that concept came from as a whole. A big thing for the album for me as well is a lot of the songs are written from a first-person perspective, but I am more trying to convey a message from what I see a lot of people have. So, it’s maybe told from my perspective but it’s more of a thing that I see through other people and try to convey it as me but for everyone, you know what I mean?”

Yes… readers will connect and surely relate to what Carroll is saying.

Listeners can look forward to an LP of gritty melodic hardcore from Among Them called Coming and Going which is out now. It will surely be a special release based on anticipated lyrical themes and Carroll alludes to a few surprises.

“Listeners can expect something a bit different. We are proud to say that we think our sound is a bit unique, although people try to label a lot all the time, we think we found something that is pretty cool and a good mix of the genres that we all listen to at our own times, and it’s hard-hitting, and energetic and yes, that is what we bring to it.”
