News : Soundwave Headliner Calls Upon Bands For Replacement Festival

By on December 18, 2015

As discussed earlier today on theMusic, following the announcement of Soundwave 2016’s cancellation by promoter AJ Maddah, John Sankey, drummer behind LA band Devil You Know (one of SW16’s headliners), is in the process of rallying together local and international bands to create what would be one of the first of its kind: a fan-funded rock music festival.

No formal details have been shared or announced at this time, but Sankey has already begun working with a production team and scouting potential venues in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne (the original three locations Soundwave 2016 would have taken place in). Sankey hopes to bring some of the bands that were due to appear at SW16 onboard with the idea, and bring them to Australia early next year.

Sankey noted, “I’ve been mates with AJ for a really long time and we were devastated to hear the news about Soundwave being cancelled.” Then going on to say, “He did such an awesome job with it all and turned it into one of the last places that Aussies could go to hear great, international and local metal bands. We were planning on coming to Australia, so why not round up the guys and figure out a way to come down anyway?”

John Sankey plans to start a kickstarter within the next few days. Event and pledge information is expected to be released soon also, with Sankey noting that ticket sales generated above the goal will be split between the festival’s acts. Sankey then stated: “The fans are screaming out to see these bands, so whether or not this thing actually happens is totally up to them now.”

Stay tuned as further information develops.
