News : Sunn O))) and Pelican are coming!

By on July 5, 2012

Press release:

Heathen Skulls and Life Is Noise are proud to present the 3rd Australian tour by drone doom metal legends Sunn O))). This October they’ll be touring nationally with fellow Southern Lord recording artists, Chicago’s now legendary, post metal quartet Pelican.

Stephen O’Malley (avant-garde pioneer) and Greg Anderson (founder of LA based metal label Southern Lord) founded Sunn O))) in 1998 as a tribute to the Seattle based, Dylan Carlson fronted, drone doom project Earth. Sunn O))) was named after Earth’s choice of amplifiers. Continuing a long-term collaboration that spawns back to the early 90’s in Seattle through projects like Burning Witch, Sunn O))) is a powerful force lead by Greg and Stephen that’s supported by a revolving cast of sonic architects and audio/visual collaborators.

Best known for their extremely high volume and intense low end bass frequencies, through their 14 year career Sunn O))) have delved into numerous charcoal scorched blackened genres. Gone are the days of paying tribute to Earth’s signature sound, Sunn O))) have now gone far beyond the realm of repetitious feedback drenched drone by exploring such vast sonic landscapes as doom, minimalism, ambient, avant-garde and black metal whilst maintaining a high level of complex, compositional practices that leave audiences floored.

Though their recordings are highly regarded, it’s undeniable that live is where Sunn O))) really take form, the live experience is like a visceral buzz of extreme volume that transforms their monstrous sludge riffs into chiropractic chords that strike like thunderous cracks of lightning. Adding to the sensory overload of the Sunn O))) live experience, Greg, Stephen, and their fellow sonic collaborators, are obscured in a thick cloud of fog, dressed in hooded robes whilst ceremoniously thrusting their guitars toward the sky in front of an impressive wall of amplifiers.

For their third Australian tour, Sunn O)) will be bringing fellow Southern Lord recording artists Pelican back to Australia, this being their second Australian tour. Pelican recently released a new four song EP on Southern Lord entitled Ataraxia/Taraxis, which has been critically acclaimed and represents a new chapter in the band’s evolution.
