News : Neil Mitchell doesn’t like Ouroboros

By on May 21, 2012

As reported over at The Australian, Sydney death metallers Ouroboros were recently awarded a grant from the Australian Council for the Arts. The $20,000 will go towards writing and recording their next album, including the use of a symphony orchestra.

“Composer Matthew Hindson, chair of the Australia Council music board which approved the grant, said of Ouroboros: “They have a degree of technical virtuosity and musicianship. No matter what kind of music you are involved in, that comes through.””

This is great news for the band, and a nice turn of events. As expected though, not everybody is happy;

“It’s awful stuff, and you’re paying for it…”

Neil Mitchell over at 3AW Radio, for example, is claiming that funding shouldn’t go towards death metal because lacks musical value. He then continues on to be a bit of a dick and make a highly original cookie monster reference. You can listen to the reasonably short clip over at the 3AW website.

Of course, he is entirely incorrect. Every style of music has value, and as the caller pointed out, it’s purely personal taste. Ignoring whether you enjoy Ouroboros, and even ignoring the fact it went towards metal, it’s fantastic to see grants going out to different areas that don’t normally receive much support.

Kudos to Ouroboros. We’re certainly keen to hear the new album.
