News : New pre-production track from The Automata

By on January 17, 2012

Wagga-based band The Automata (feat. members of Leicohtica) are hitting the stage soon for a show with Melbourne’s Circles. To up the hype a little bit, they have uploaded a new pre-production track titled Tides for your aural pleasure, showing a slight change in their sound. Give it a listen over here, but before that, read the below blog from the band for a bit of information about it.

You can catch the band at Sydney’s Venom Nightclub on Jan 28th, with Circles and As Silence Breaks.

“So here I am filling you in on some directional changes within The Automata. Nothing drastic, just some interesting thoughts to bring vocal diversity into the mix. I am recording this afternoon at DM Audio Production our brand new track Tides.

Damian asked me a few months ago to consider how I might write lyrics that act as a potential biological pre-cursor to the apocalyptic themes of our debut release ‘Praise to the Parasites’. What I have begun doing is working from a psychological standpoint of threat of self annihilation and analyzing and trying to find global themes that make an individual put self-destruction and political and emotional issues into a singularity. I have also taken a more human approach to the sound of my voice, where on our previous release I tried to be as robotic as possible, without effects, on this release the vocal sound will be more ‘human’ whilst still containing traces of machination where necessary.

The first track we will be releasing for your listening delight deals with notions of loss, particularly identity loss through corporatism and the sacrifice of ones self to economic sustainability. It is asking the question ‘What do you do for a living’ and meaning it… it is not asking ‘what do you do to earn money’… earning money and living are intertwined but not the same.

The repeated questioning of depths come from the hymn From These Depths, O Lord, however they have been changed to reflect a growing sense of hopelessness. You will get to ear this VERY soon! Here is the words;”

The Automata – Tides

Stand, your ground, don’t let the waters take you,
And remember, life, is the only thing you truly own,
Down, in the depths, don’t allow despair to guide you,
Let tomorrow, be the hope that keeps you here.

When blindfolded, you will only see what you want to see.
Well I reject this carbon-based monopoly,
Mother told me, in silence, you are free to dream.
Yet I still wonder if anyone is truly, free.

And as the tides rise up, we hold our breath,
Steadfast, determined to be cleansed,
And under water, our eyes are opened,
To a whole new world, it’s a whole new world. (waiting)

At these depths, no-one can hear you,
At these depths, there is no mercy,
At these depths, god cannot exist,
At these depths, at these depths.

Down, In this Abyss. No-one can hear you.
These depths, they drown. (but only if you let them).
In darkness, you are free to dream.
Free to see what you want to see.

Yet I still wonder if anyone is truly, free
