Album Reviews : Tomb of Doom – Digust

By on March 11, 2011

Based in South-East Queensland, four-piece Tomb of Doom have been slowly building up a fan base over the last couple of years on the back of their constant performing and unashamedly crushing deathcore sound, and have just self-released their long awaited debut EP; “Disgust”.

Recorded with Matt Shorter, the Sunshine Coast based producer once again does a fantastic job, as he did recently with Signal The Firing Squad’s “Earth Harvest”, and will probably find himself getting a lot more work on the back of the two awesome sounding releases. Frontman Ben Eugene’s vocal attack resembles both Steve Marios and Alex Erian from the now defunct Despised Icon, as he roars, shouts and even delivers the odd super-low guttural growl – but his enunciation isn’t the greatest in the world, as you’ll have to keep the lyrics close on hand whilst listening to the EP to understand what the hell he’s going on about.

Conveniently that brings us to the lyrical content on “Disgust”. Whether they are actually based on reality or the group has listened to Dr Dre and Ice Cube’s “Natural Born Killaz” one too many times, the very hip hop/rap influenced lyrics certainly stand out from what a lot of bands are doing today. Musically Tomb of Doom never delve into anything too complex, with the band for the majority of the time focusing on getting a solid groove down and delivering bone-splitting breakdowns, while “Lined In Chalk” features some bouncing poly-rhythms and a tasty outro guitar solo.

Outside of the aforementioned lyrics, the EP really doesn’t contain anything that you haven’t heard before, and it’s safe to say that Tomb of Doom probably won’t convert any non-believers into the world of deathcore. But what it will surely do is attract a lot of interest from fans of the genre, and “Disgust” shows that the young four-piece has a lot of potential to go far within the scene and ultimately the EP is just a fun, violent, heavy release. 7/10
