Interview with THE OCULARIS INFERNUM – 11/08/2008

MO: First of all I would like to thank you for taking part in this interview for www.metalobsession.net, and now could I please get you to quickly introduce yourself and The Ocularis Infernum to the readers of MetalObsession.net.
OI:
Darren, 21, Vocalist

The Ocularis Infernum are essentially a four piece tech death/grind outfit with hints of groove, melody and slam; members are scattered over suburban Melbourne

MO: The band has been around now for a few years in the live scene, tell me about the process of getting started up and ready to gig?
OI:
It’s pretty much like learning your ABC’s up until the point where you write a thesis. We start with a collection of riffs and programmed drum patterns to form a skeleton, we fuck with it until we are satisfied, vocals are added and a new song is given birth to.

The song is brought into the rehearsal studio where we further make modifications and at which point it is repeatedly rehearsed until its super tight, as tightness is the vital factor with playing this type of music.

Multiply this by 15 and you have yourself an Ocularis set.

MO: After around a year in ‘hibernation’ after the departure of the bands previous drummer, how is the band feeling about hitting the live stage back up again with Dan Presland (Ne Obliviscaris, Aphotic Dawn) behind the kit?
OI:
Fucking Ecstatic! Ocularis fans should expect something different to what they were previously used to. Dan is the Man.

MO: When I hear the name ‘The Ocularis Infernum”, my mind immediately takes me to your amazing energetic live shows. Tell me how important it is for the band to take your music to the people.
OI:
Mandatory; A Bands presence makes all the difference.

We want to encapsulate our audience as much as we can by having a visual performance, and not just aural. Nobody wants to watch a boring band.

MO: Recently the band has signed on with management company Welkin Entertainment. How important has the support from them been for the band?
OI:
Welkin have played quite a significant role in Ocularis’ return, the boys have helped us out substantially in getting our asses re-established and back on the scene.

MO: And in September I see you will be bringing your music to Adelaide for the first time at the Against the Grain Festival on September 13th. Is this the first interstate trip for the band and what can Adelaide’s metal heads expect from the festival appearance?
OI:
Actually, we made an appearance in Adelaide on July of 2006, alongside good friends ‘Here I Die’

ATG4 will be our second trip interstate and our second trip to Adelaide. Adelaide metal heads should expect that what is ‘The Ocularis Infernum’

MO: What’s next for the band? Any plans on releasing your music?
OI:
A Full Length is on the cards, hopefully 2009 will reveal promise

MO: The metal scene and in particular the grind core scene in Australia is amazingly talented and numerous at the moment, who are some of your favourite Aussie bands and who should we should check out?
OI:
Agents of Abhorrence, need I say more?

MO: Thanks alot for your time mate, and I look forward to catching The Ocularis Infernum’s comeback show at The Arthouse in Melbourne on August 16th alongside Separatist from Tassie and friends!
OI:
Cheers! Don’t forget to bring your moshin’ boots!
